Evolution is a central theme in the work of Rico Sequeira — understood here as a process of risk-taking and continuous transformation.
This installation, presented in 2025 in Vilamoura, reflects the artist’s ongoing exploration of change as both a conceptual and visual process. Each iteration of Sequeira’s practice marks a deliberate departure from previous forms, embracing uncertainty and experimentation as essential tools for creation.
Across his career, the artist has consistently moved beyond the comfort of repetition, allowing each exhibition to introduce new visual languages, materials, and references. This approach is grounded in the daily discipline of artistic production and a sustained engagement with the unknown.
A defining feature of Sequeira’s work is his capacity for resilience — a return to a foundational visual identity after periods of experimentation. This cyclical movement, between disruption and continuity, creates a recognisable thread that links each series and metamorphosis.
In this installation, that thread serves as a grounding element. Even within compositions that suggest disorder — through overlapping lines, collaged fragments, comic book figures, or allusions to Goya — a structural coherence remains. The abstract nature of the work invites open interpretation, allowing viewers to engage freely with its forms, while each element retains specific meaning within the artist’s visual vocabulary.
